Introduction

Hello everyone, I’m Easygoing.

Today, I’m excited to introduce flux-2-klein-4b_clear, a newly released image editing AI model capable of generating high-quality illustrations at high speeds.

What is Flux.2 [klein]?

Flux.2 [klein] is an image generation and editing AI model released by Black Forest Labs on January 15, 2026.

While the company previously released Flux.2 [dev]—a high-capacity, high-performance model for local environments—in November 2025, they have now added Flux.2 [klein] to the lineup as a lightweight and high-speed alternative.

Model Name Capacity Text Encoder Generation Speed License
Flux.2 [dev] 110.1 GB Mistral-3.1-24B FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.0

Z-Image-Turbo 20.2 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0
Flux.2 [klein] 4B 16.3 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0

The Flux.2 [klein] model features a text encoder swapped for Qwen-3, which is lighter and offers superior image recognition capabilities. Furthermore, its Transformer architecture is entirely different from the Flux.2 [dev] model.

While it shares the same "Flux.2" branding, Flux.2 [klein] is essentially an entirely new model developed from the ground up.

Two Versions of Flux.2 [klein]

Flux.2 [klein] comes in two different sizes (capacities).

Capacities of Flux.2 and Z-Image-Turbo Models

Model Name Capacity Text Encoder Generation Speed License
Flux.2 [dev] 110.1 GB Mistral-3.1-24B FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.0
Flux.2 [klein] 9B 34.3 GB Qwen3-8B 🟑 FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.1
Z-Image-Turbo 20.2 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0
Flux.2 [klein] 4B 16.3 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0
  • Flux.2 [klein] 9B: A non-commercial model designed to run on high-performance GPUs.
  • Flux.2 [klein] 4B: A compact and lightweight model capable of running on consumer-grade GPUs.

The direct rival to Flux.2 [klein] is Alibaba's Z-Image-Turbo model.

Flux.2 [klein] 9B aims to surpass Z-Image-Turbo in quality, while Flux.2 [klein] 4B aims to exceed it in speed while maintaining equivalent quality.

Introducing flux-2-klein-4b_clear!

I have developed flux-2-klein-4b_clear, an improved version of the Flux.2 [klein] 4B model.

Compared to the original, the flux-2-klein-4b_clear model has been fine-tuned for enhanced clarity and vivid color expression.

Real Illustrations!

Let’s take a look at some actual generated images.

On the left is the newly adjusted flux-2-klein-4b_clear, and on the right is the original flux-2-klein-4b model.

Zoomed-in illustration comparison. The flux-2-klein-4b_clear on the left shows more vivid color expression than the original on the right

Compared to the original flux-2-klein-4b model, flux-2-klein-4b_clear has significantly reduced the visible noise and yellowish tint often found in distilled models.

I believe flux-2-klein-4b_clear has resulted in much more visually persuasive illustrations.

Comparison with Z-Image-Turbo!

Now, let’s compare flux-2-klein-4b_clear with its rival, the Z-Image-Turbo model.

The Z-Image-Turbo_clear model used for this comparison is an original model I previously created.

Zoomed comparison of illustration textures. Due to the new VAE, flux-2-klein-4b_clear appears to have clearer details

While it is difficult to make a simple comparison as each model has its own stylistic characteristics, the zoomed-in views show that flux-2-klein-4b_clear provides a cleaner, less noisy expression.

Because the Flux.2 [klein] 4B model utilizes a VAE that is one generation ahead of Z-Image, it may be inherently better at rendering fine details.

Flux.2 features a next-generation VAE.

On the other hand, when generating multiple illustrations in succession, Z-Image-Turbo clearly has fewer anatomical errors (such as hands/fingers). For consistent, error-free generation, Z-Image-Turbo takes the lead.

Licensing for Flux.2 [klein] 4B and 9B

Since the Flux.2 [klein] 4B model is smaller and lighter than Z-Image-Turbo, its higher frequency of anatomical artifacts is, in a sense, an expected result.

Model Name Capacity Text Encoder Generation Speed License
Flux.2 [dev] 110.1 GB Mistral-3.1-24B FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.0
Flux.2 [klein] 9B 34.3 GB Qwen3-8B 🟑 FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.1
Z-Image-Turbo 20.2 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0
Flux.2 [klein] 4B 16.3 GB Qwen3-4B 🟒 Apache-2.0

While the larger 9B model of Flux.2 [klein] is also available, it is under the FLUX Non-Commercial License v2.1, which prohibits commercial use. This makes it unlikely to see much improvement or adoption within the community.

The next generation of compact, lightweight image generation models—where Flux.2 [klein] and Z-Image are currently competing—is expected to become the most critical "volume zone" (mainstream segment).

For the late-arriving Flux.2 [klein] to truly compete, I believe Black Forest Labs needs to offer the 9B model a license that allows it to go head-to-head with Z-Image on equal footing.

The Real Rival: Z-Image-Edit

Furthermore, while the Z-Image-Turbo used in this comparison is a simple image generation model, Flux.2 [klein] is an image editing AI model that can also be used to modify existing images.

The real rival is Z-Image-Edit.

In this regard, Flux.2 [klein] has an advantage. However, Alibaba has already announced the upcoming release of Z-Image-Edit, which will feature image editing capabilities.

Considering that this will be the true competitor, it remains to be seen which model will ultimately come out on top.

Summary: Will Flux.2 [klein] Become the Top Contender?

  • Flux.2 [klein] is compact and lightweight.
  • flux-2-klein-4b_clear improves color expression and clarity.
  • It has both pros and cons compared to Z-Image-Turbo.

Today, we took a look at the Flux.2 [klein] model.

Flux.2 [klein] is highly polished, and it is impressive that Black Forest Labs developed and released a competitor with such performance just two months after Alibaba pioneered the next-generation lightweight model market with Z-Image-Turbo.

Will Flux.2 [klein] be the one to watch?

However, in the field of AI image generation, a two-month lag is significant. Unlike the "Golden Age" of Flux.1, Black Forest Labs now finds itself in the position of a challenger starting a step behind.

I will be watching closely to see if the company continues to develop solo, trusting in its own technical prowess, or if it moves toward harnessing the power of the community by revising its licensing.

Thank you for reading until the end!
